Add to this the fact that Alabama has one of the highest traffic fatality rates in the nation and things are not looking good for the family tree.

Nobody likes to be out fishing and listening to a football game more than I do. However if I have a major accident on the way home, I could be in real trouble. There is a strong connection between survival rates and rural counties.

Here is what we are facing in Alabama. In rural areas, it just takes longer for emergency personnel to get to us and it takes longer to get to a hospital. Plus depending on our injury, the nearest doctor may not be the specialist we need.

My experience also tells me that rural folk just spend longer on the road. We don’t mind driving a little farther to go to a party, shop or just enjoy some of the outdoors.

I have seen a lot of traffic accidents over my time helping injured people. I have also talked to a lot of people hurt on rural roads. Here is some advice. First, just because you see less cars doesn’t mean you are less likely to be hurt. This sounds like common sense but you would be surprised how many people act like it is not true.

One other thing, in rural areas we just tend to go faster. I have done it myself. I am not proud of that. You don’t have to be a Physics Engineer to realize that if you are going faster and hit something, the injury is going to be more severe.
