Avoid That AL Trooper Ticket

Because of less traffic but the same number of troopers on the road this Christmas and New Year’s, my prediction is you will see more tickets being given for what are considered minor infractions.

So, to keep you safe and ticket free, here are some reminders of the law in Alabama.

  • Move over. If you see an emergency vehicle on the side of the road, move over at least one lane or drop your speed by 15 mph.
  • Buckle your seatbelt. With the shoulder strap visible through the window, it is pretty easy to spot when you are breaking this law. Everyone needs to be strapped in.
  • Don’t speed. I know some good ol’ boys say a few miles over is ok. Well, not to a judge, it isn’t. Do the speed limit or under.
  • Social distance your car from the car in front of you. You can get a ticket for driving too close. Plus, you can’t stop safely if the other guy stomps on his breaks.
  • Stop at stop signs. Rolling through an intersection may feel safe to you, but it is not. There is a reason the stop sign is there.
  • Signal if you change lanes. I think I-10 may be the worst for this. I cannot tell you how often I wanted to make a citizen’s arrest. By the way, those types of arrests are legal in Alabama under certain circumstances, but I would not suggest you try it. Let the troopers do the troopers’ job.

One request. If you see a trooper during some downtime this holiday — say thank you. It is a tough job keeping us Alabamians safe.
