Flaky skin: Cancer or something else?

Allen Ritchie • December 16, 2020

According to the CDC, skin cancer is the most common type of cancer that Americans in Alabama and across the country will see. It is this fact that sometimes makes people mistake their flaky skin for cancer. Fortunately, a cancer diagnosis is not always the case. How can you know if you simply have flaky skin or if it’s something more serious? Read on to learn further information on this topic and hopefully reduce your stress levels.

Reason for flaky skin

There are millions of Americans who suffer from dry skin. In many cases, this could simply be the issue, and applying moisturizer is often enough to mediate the problem. But what if that flaky skin is red and sensitive to the touch? In this case, the most common diagnosis would be something called psoriasis. This occurs when a person has an autoimmune condition. The body will grow skin cells in a rapid manner, and that fast growth leads to a person’s skin becoming sensitive and flaky. Unfortunately, when a doctor is not experienced in this type of issue, they may misdiagnose a person with cancer, and that is when potential medical malpractice comes into play.

What does cancerous skin look like?

Not all red marks on your skin are going to be signs of cancer. However, there are certain characteristics that a person should be aware of if they begin to notice them on their own body. Cancer spots on the skin will look red, be scaly and most likely bleed from time to time. The following includes some of the areas in which cancer is commonly found:

  • Forehead
  • Ears
  • Lips
  • Hands
  • Arms

In some cases, doctors issue a misdiagnosis of skin cancer. People could go through unnecessary and invasive procedures that lead to long-term damage. You may want to obtain the services of an attorney experienced in medical malpractice to help you receive compensation and justice.
