Neglecting those who need the most care

Allen Ritchie • August 2, 2021

If you have a family member in a nursing home in Alabama, you expect that the person will be treated with respect and cared for in a professional manner. When residents fail to receive the care that they deserve, it’s often considered neglect. It might not be seen for weeks or months and can sometimes be unintentional in nature.

Medical

One of the common types of nursing home abuse and neglect involves medical procedures and care. Workers might not give residents medications as directed or when they are needed. A type of unintentional neglect would be if a worker gives an incorrect dosage. Neglect can also be in the form of letting residents stay in bed without turning them over or letting them stay in wet clothes that could lead to bedsores.

Emotional

Even though you might visit your family member in a nursing home or they participate in some of the activities that are offered, emotional neglect can occur. Workers might not engage with some residents as much as others or might not offer to take residents to the dining room or to take part in special events, causing them to feel alone. Residents might not be provided with the equipment needed to move around so that they are unable to interact with others in the nursing home.

Basic needs

Residents in a nursing home should receive the basic care that they need. Neglect can occur if workers don’t provide a comfortable temperature or nutritious meals and snacks during the day, especially if residents state that they are hungry. This type of neglect can have a serious impact on a resident’s health and quality of life, so it’s important to notify the correct parties if you suspect neglect.
