Slip and fall is a silly-sounding name for a serious situation. These dangerous accidents can be caused by wet surfaces, uneven carpeting, insufficient lighting, loose handrails, and so much more. The injuries can result in months, if not years, of recovery.

Let me set one thing straight – it is not true that if you fall in a business, the business will give you money. Here is why – you are fighting the insurance company of the business and not the actual business owner. The insurance company will pay any money, and not surprisingly, they do not like doing this.

However, there are some things you can do to help your case.

The more you wait, the less likely you will appear to be hurt. Also, we will need the opinion of a medical professional to back up the severity of your injuries. He or she can also validate your complaints of pain and suffering.

You want a written report. Most businesses have procedures to cover accidents in their store or offices. However, I strongly suggest that you do not make a statement to an insurance adjuster for the business until you have spoken to a lawyer.

If your injuries permit or you have a friend with you, use your phone to grab pictures of the scene. You will be amazed at how quickly evidence disappears. Also, document your injuries.

Lots of businesses now have video camera recordings covering much, if not all, of their property. A lawyer can issue a letter that prohibits companies from destroying that evidence.

One final thought – do not discuss your accident on social media. What you say there can only hurt your case.
