What to do after your slip and fall at work

Allen Ritchie • October 8, 2021

A common injury for many workers in Alabama is slipping and falling while on the job. These injuries can be very serious when the victim hits their head or injures their back or legs in any manner. Broken vertebrae and hips are common results of slip and fall injuries. Employers may want to blame the accident on the worker, but the truth about workers’ compensation is that it is a no-fault insurance program. Additionally, if the employer has exhibited negligence in any manner, it could result in a standard personal injury lawsuit aside from a workers’ comp claim.

Report the injury as soon as possible

Depending on the work location, it may be necessary to seek injury treatment before reporting it to an employer. Slip and fall injuries can occur anywhere while on the job. When happening at a central work location where supervision is close, contacting immediate supervision personnel first is best. Otherwise, seek treatment and contact supervision in the process. It can also be necessary to call 911 in very serious situations in off-site work locations.

Follow all medical recommendations

Injured workers should follow all medical recommendations and make sure to attend every medical appointment and rehabilitation session. Workers’ comp insurance companies can investigate as well as employers, and they often try to assert that the injury is not as bad as claimed or that it is not work-related. This is common in slip and fall injuries generating a personal injury claim as well.

It is important to remember that employers are exempt from general damage claims for ongoing living issues due to a workplace injury. However, if employers have been non-compliant and exhibited any signs of negligence, a personal injury suit could be available.
