Alabama Law: Hurt by a Mardi Gras Drinker

For some Mardi Gras revelers here in Mobile, drinking is part of the celebration. But too much liquor can cost you cash and your freedom. Perhaps even more disastrous, you could hurt … and I mean seriously hurt … another person.

We tend to represent people injured by drunk drivers, and I can tell you most every year around Mardi Gras, we have to fight to get those people’s medical bills paid and get them compensation for their pain and suffering.

Let me give you some facts that might help you play it safe.

  • There are plain-clothed police at the parades. Their job is to keep everyone safe, which might mean if you are excessively drinking, you are taken out of the celebration. Though my experience is that law enforcement tends to be understanding at this time of year, there are several situations where they seem to have zero tolerance. One of those is drunk driving.
  • Party with a group. Aside from hopefully having a non-drinking designated driver, a group can often stop you from making some seriously poor decisions.
  • Remember, drunk driving in our state is taken seriously no matter the time of year. Even a first-time offense can lead to thousands of dollars in fines, possible jail time, and suspension of your driver’s license.

I love our city, and I love Mardi Gras. Celebration is what Mardi Gras is all about. Just don’t be the fool. You don’t want to look back on his holiday as one of the worst of your life.
