What Alabama car insurance should I buy? Is cheap the way to go?

Question: You know Alabama insurance companies. Which insurance should I get?

JASON: Here is the irony. The insurance company that is most important to you is usually not the one you send payments to. The real question is: What insurance company does the person who hit me have?

All insurance companies want to pay as little as possible.

That is probably not a surprise to you. But here is the shocker. Some insurance companies are saying they are paying out more than they are taking in. No business can continue to operate if that is true. For this reason, I suggest you go with the top insurance companies in our state. They seem to be most likely to remain in business and be there when you need them.

Here are the top 6 by market share:

1. State Farm Group – 22.7% market share

2. Allstate Insurance Group – 14.9%

3. Alfa Insurance Group – 13.1%

4. Progressive Group   11.6%

5. Geico owned by Berkshire Hathaway Group – 10.9%

6. USAA – 7.3%

Every other insurance company in Alabama has under 3% of the state’s market share.

Each of these companies does things differently. I have found some are more reasonable than others. But again, it doesn’t really matter since you have to deal with the company that carries the insurance of the driver who hit you.

The insurance adjuster who will decide how much money you get can easily be from out of state.

Just as a call to your local cable company can be answered by someone 5 states away … or 5 countries away … some insurance companies pool adjusters who may know very little about our state. When I first started practicing law, many adjusters lived here. They knew our counties, our streets, and the other lawyers. Now, the adjustor may not even know our unique laws or how to apply them to the facts of your case.

You need uninsured motorist coverage.

This type of insurance is meant to protect you if the other driver has too little or no insurance. Remember, the Alabama minimum insurance requirements will likely not even cover your expenses if you are in a severe accident. Protect yourself with uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

We help people who are hurt in all types of accidents. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to call us. The call will cost you nothing. We are proud to be called “the lawyers near me” in and around Tillmans Corner.
