Porch pirates. Could a new Alabama law help in Mobile and Baldwin Counties?

Allen Ritchie • December 28, 2024

Question: Porch pirates seem to be on the increase in Mobile. What does the law say?

JASON: You may like 2025, as Alabama considers a very strong penalty for people who steal things delivered to your front door. Say 20 years in prison!!!

And that is not just any prison but rather an Alabama prison. A place not known for its catering and upscale accommodations.

One state legislator, State Sen. April Weaver, says she will introduce a bill in the next legislative session to make stealing off a residential doorway a felony. Why? Statistics show that package theft is approaching nearly half of all Alabama homes.

Our bordering states like Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee already have porch pirate laws, and the senator seems to feel we not only need to join the fight but need to lead it.

Right now, in Alabama, if someone steals your stuff, the penalty is based on the item’s value.

Here is how it generally breaks down:

  • $500 or under – up to 1 year incarceration
  • $501 to $1499 – between 1 to 5 years
  • $1500 to $2500 – up to 10 years
  • $2501 or over – up to 20 years

The proposed new law would make it a felony just to take the package.

Senator Weaver said, “The Grinches among us are still trying to steal Christmas, but perhaps a 20-year prison sentence in Alabama will give their hearts plenty of time to grow three sizes.”

That is hard to argue with — if it is your package on your porch.
