Why Is Labor Day So Deadly?

Allen Ritchie • September 1, 2022

By the end of the Labor Day holiday, roughly 300 people will be dead, and thousands of others will be injured in America. Some of those traffic accidents will be right here on the Gulf Coast.

Think it doesn’t happen? Just look around. If you are traveling any distance this weekend, you will probably see a wreck … a bad one. It will destroy families, create terrible suffering, and likely could have been prevented.

I could give you a lot of statistics but let me put the holiday into perspective from a working lawyer’s point of view.

This weekend is one, if not the, most dangerous of the year. I can almost guarantee that a parent or spouse will call me this weekend or perhaps on Tuesday with tragic news.

From my experience, there is a typical combination that makes it so dangerous – inexperienced drivers (25 and under), who are partying too much, staying up too late, and then hitting the road usually at night. Sound like anyone you know? He or she could be in real danger.

Let me add one other problem. The number of distracted driving accidents is currently the highest I have ever seen.

I want to give you 3 simple rules that can save you a lot of grief. Here we go.

  • Don’t drink and drive
  • Don’t drive tired
  • Pay attention to what you are doing.

Do these 3 things, and you have a good chance of seeing Labor Day next year.

Remember, there will be many more cars on the road this weekend. You can do everything right and still be in trouble. So, watch out for the other drivers. There is no shame in pulling back when you see someone acting irrationally.

Have fun and enjoy all that our area provides. Just be smart about it. If trouble comes to someone you love, give me a call. I will be glad to help.

This Sunday, September 4, will be the last of our 30-minute call-in shows for the rest of the year. So, if you have a question, join us on NBC 15 LawCall here in Mobile this Sunday night at 10:30, right after the news. We are taking a break during football season and will offer 5-minute segments for the rest of the year. Remember, we will still have a live call-in segment every Monday on NBC 15 around lunchtime, and you can always call our office.
